It is well documented that the cultural and creative sectors (CCS) can play a vital role in the green transition of European society. Innovation policies and funding instruments can empower the CCS to fulfill this role. One significant initiative in this context is the New European Bauhaus (NEB), an interdisciplinary EU flagship project that seeks to connect the EU Green Deal with the everyday living spaces and experiences of citizens. The NEB highlights the competencies of the CCS as crucial assets for building a more sustainable future and mobilises several EU research & innovation funding instruments to support (CCS) actors to create “a beautiful, sustainable and inclusive future”. Below is a selection of policy recommendations related to NEB.

Culture(s) for Sustainability

This publication by Culture Action Europe emphasises the vital role of culture as the “fourth pillar” of sustainability, advocating its integration into global and European strategies alongside economic, social, and environmental dimensions. It explores how cultural and creative sectors drive sustainable practices, foster community resilience, and promote biodiversity conservation. Highlighting local cultures and heritage, it introduces “Cultural Ecosystem Services” to assess culture’s value in sustainability. With actionable recommendations for policymakers, the publication calls for aligning green policies with cultural contexts, leveraging creative sectors for transformative change, and embedding cultural perspectives into frameworks like the European Green Deal and Sustainable Development Goals.
